The painting is of Keward Brook in Silver Street, in the cathedral city of Wells, on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, Somerset, UK. It has been known for kingfishers to frequent the brook.

Wells is named after 3 wells, one in the market place and 2 within the grounds of the Bishops Palace, which fills the surrounding moat which then flows into Keward Brook, which eventually joins the river Sheppy.
